Die Rote Fahne ist das Identifikationssymbol sozialistischer und kommunistischer Organisationen sowie der Arbeiterbewegung. In der DDR wurde sie als Arbeiterfahne bezeichnet und an Feiertagen oft zusätzlich zur Staatsflagge gehisst. Sie weht in monumentaler Darstellung hinter der Ernst-Thälmann- Büste selbst und kam in der DDR-Vergangenheit bei den zahlreichen Kundgebungen auf deren Vorplatz immer wieder zum Einsatz.

FALLEN FLAG greift dieses Symbol auf und platziert den Faltenwurf einer gefallenen überdimensionalen roten Flagge, diagonal auf den Denkmalsvorplatz. Die künstlerische Kommentierung thematisiert mit dem Fall dieses zentralen Symbols der DDR- und Ostblock-Geschichte den Niedergang der sozialistischen Gesellschaftsordnung, dessen Zeitzeugnisse – manifestiert in der Erscheinungsform des historischen Platz-Ensembles – bedeckt werden, teilweise verschwinden und damit für uns weniger greifbar und präsent erscheinen, wie unter dem Schleier einer vergangenen Zeit.

The red flag is the identification symbol of socialist and communist organizations as well as the labor movement. In the GDR it was called the workers' flag and was often hoisted in addition to the national flag on public holidays. It blows in a monumental representation behind the Ernst Thälmann bust itself and was used again and again in the GDR past at the numerous rallies on its forecourt.

FALLEN FLAG picks up on this symbol and places the folds of a fallen oversized red flag diagonally on the forecourt of the monument. With the fall of this central symbol of GDR and Eastern Bloc history, the artistic commentary addresses the decline of the socialist social order, whose contemporary testimonies - manifested in the appearance of the historical square ensemble - are covered, partially disappearing and thus appear less tangible and present for us , as if under the veil of a bygone age.
